Credit the right person for the sale
Commission credit can follow the invoice clerk, be set line by line on the invoice, follow the salesperson assigned to the customer for account and territory selling, or be split between salespeople; line mode can fall back to the invoice clerk when no salesperson is set.
Pay more only once targets are hit
Commission tiers are unlocked by cumulative gross sales thresholds, with no commission paid at all until the first gate is passed and the rate stepping up at each higher threshold.
Pay commission on margin, not turnover
Rates are set per salesperson and per inventory sub-category and banded by achieved profit margin, so higher-margin sales earn a higher rate and sales below a floor earn nothing. Rates can alternatively be driven by discount from list.
Base commission on whatever you choose
Commission can be calculated on selling price, on gross profit, or on the gap between selling price and a nominated base price schedule with a percentage tolerance and a fallback price when the base is zero. The basis itself can vary by salesperson.
Credit the rep who actually sold it
Each salesperson carries a roll of their own barcode labels; sticking one on the item and scanning it after the part sets that invoice line's commission to them.
